  Metal orb w/ biological ooze maybe from aliens discovered, very odd story

  not too much reporting on this story but several known news agencies if you google it.

  this titanium metal orb, the size of a human hair was found and having bio matter oozing out of it.

  Pretty cool story. And not a hoax at all. Both the people mentioned in the article, Chandra Wickramasinghe and Milton Wainwright, are real scientists who are working to try and prove their hypothesis of panspermia using the scientific method (unlike most the idiots on the History Channel).

  That said, it has NOT been confirmed that this is organic material nor that it is of alien origin. The standard of evidence for proving the existence of alien life is going to be very high. I personally am going to withhold judgment until they publish a peer reviewed scientific paper on their findings. And even then, I will continue to be highly skeptical until a group of outside researchers is able to look at the material and reach similar conclusions.

  All my caveats aside, it would be awesome if we find out this is actually alien life! SETI and NASA would surely get a huge bump in their funding.

  Funny story about dumb JW rules

  some years ago (the year when i got baptized), i was at a district convention (or whatever they call them these days) with my best friend.

  he had a part in one of those acting parts at the convention (i have no idea the term jw's use for them in english).

  anyway, we were both seeing through the bullshit of the borg but weren't aware at the time of this forum or other "apostate" groups, nor of the full extent of the perversity of this religion.

  Carbon-dating questions??

  i recently heard a story from a jw about stupid scientists.

  there was an awake article about archeaologist who found an ancient piece of art.

  it was sent to a university for dating.

  This story is bogus. Those who submitted the sample were specifically warned that they were dating the organic material on the pottery and NOT the pottery itself.

  "We dated the organic material on the stone but warned the submitter that the date had no meaning until this material had been identified. This was never done, and yet they still publicized the date which of course provides no information of the actual date at which the stone was painted."

  This reminds me of the time Ken Ham sent in a dinosaur fossil to be carbon dated. He then went around telling everyone how it came back as only being a few thousand years old. Of course, the one part of the story he didn't reveal was that the company that dated the fossil told him that fossils contained no carbon and that what they dated was the varnish that had been put on it later to protect it.

  
  

  Anytime you hear someone make quotes about carbon dating fossils, diamonds, pottery, metal, etc. it should set off your BS meter. Carbon dating is ONLY used to date organic material. For other materials there are other dating methods. Furthermore, scientists generally use two different dating methods or more when identifying the ages of things. Because when you have two or more dating methods converging on the same date you can have an extremely high degree of confidence that date is correct.

  
  

  Carbon dating is a specific tool for a specific kind of material. Carbon dating a fossil or a piece of pottery and then concluding "c14 dating is inaccurate" would be like trying to use a hammer to mow your lawn and then concluding "hammers aren't very good tools."

  to start off with let me clarify that by asshole atheism i am not referring to strong atheism or any other type of upfront atheism.

  what i am referring to is the belligerent, hateful atheism that smacks of trolls and other types who want to derail conversation or comments at any cost..

  i enjoy hearing comments from both sides of the subjects of theism, nationalism or politics, especially from those who have intense opinions.

  I would like to second Simmon's motion. Freedom of speech is NOT freedom from criticism. I don't go door to door telling people their God isn't real or stand out on the street corner with a bull horn telling them they believe in fairy tales (even though religious people do engage in this sort of behavior). However, if someone wants to make statements of faith on a public forum - it's free game for me to speak my opinions about the nature of their beliefs.

  Are we pro-shunning or against it?

  just to continue my theme about religious freedom and how we approach criticizing the wts, i've also been thinking about 'shunning'.. i think shunning is the most unifying complaint that most ex-members of religious groups that practice it have in common.

  it is the layer that runs under every other complaint - whatever the reason for leaving it seems "... and i was shunned" can be added to it as the final rap on the charge sheet.. of course it seems like a no-brainer to many of us and we hardly ever stop to really think about it - shunning is bad, the watchtower believes in shunning therefore the watchtower is bad.

  they need to stop it.

  There's a huge difference between one individual choosing not to associate with another individual vs. a whole group of people being forced not to associate with that individual.

  There's a huge difference between not hanging out with someone because you don't want to vs. not hanging out with someone because you're afraid of being shunned too.

  There's a huge difference between being genuinely offended by a persons actions committed against you or your family and choosing not to speak to that person vs. not knowing a person's motives or actions and being told to shun them anyway.

  There's a difference between avoiding someone out of legitimate safety concerns vs. blackballing someone for imagined or arbitrary crimes.

  Shunning by itself isn't "good" or "bad". It's the motives behind the action and how that action affects well-being/unnecessary-harm that determines if shunning is good or bad.
